A really fantastic simulation of a usually classic meat dish. The best part is no animals were harmed during the making of this steak!

Creating Vegan Fake Steak

Prep time 20 mins Cook Time 20-30 mins

Phase 1
  1. Wash your hands
  2. Blitz together all the ingredients for the Steak except the Water & Oil: 180 g Vital Wheat Gluten, 100 g Green lentils, 2 tbsp Nutritional Yeast, 2 tbsp Tomato Puree, 2 tsp Cayenne Pepper, 1 tbsp Dark Soy, 1 tsp Garlic Powder, 1 tbsp Bisto Gravy Granules, 2 Pieces Dried Porcini, 1/2 tsp Onion salt, 1/2 tsp Ground coriander, 1/2 tsp Liquid Smoke & 1/2 tsp Dijon Mustard
  3. Once the mix is well combined add the water, blitz for 30 seconds, stop & scrape down the sides with a spatula & blitz again
  4. Repeat stage 3 until the mix has a dough like texture
  5. Tip it onto surface that has little oil & knead like a bread dough for a few minutes
  6. Flatten the mix with a rolling pin & cut into 4 steak shapes
Phase 2
  1. Boil a large pan of water & add a couple of tablespoons of salt
  2. When the water is boiling add the steaks and simmer for 20 minutes
  3. Whilst the steaks are simmering whisk up the ingredients for the marinade: 2 tbsp Mushroom Ketchup, 2 tbsp Dark Soy, 4 tbsp Olive Oil & 1 tbsp Maple Syrup
Phase 3
  1. When the steaks have been simmering for 20 minutes remove them from the pan with a slotted spoon & place them into a tray with a greater depth
  2. Pour over the marinade ensuring all parts of the steaks are covered
  3. After 10 minutes turn the steaks for an even coating
  4. Leave for a further 10 minutes or if doing in advance cover the tray & put in the fridge
Phase 4
  1. Grease up the griddle pan & turn on the heat
  2. Once the pan is warm place the steaks on & grill for a few minutes each side, add a little more oil throughout if necessary
  3. Serve with Chips, Grilled Tomatoes, Mushroom, Peas & Vegan Peppercorn Sauce!
